Alejandro Castro, also known as “Tanque” for his strength, becomes the new signing for FC Desamparados in the Apertura 2023-2024 season of the Liga de Ascenso. The striker and goal scorer came out from a year and a half retirement to play with the club.
The 34 year old played in his early soccer stages in Saprissa, Heredia, Grecia, Sporting FC and others from the Costa Rican top league. He also played abroad, all the way in Norway.
Castro says he’s grateful to be back on the field, and for the opportunity FC Desamparados is giving him. He continues, “I know this is an integral project with a gradual growth. Personally, I will be feeling better everyday. Regardless, I believe that I’ve exceeded the expectations everyone had on me, as well as the ones I had on myself,” Castro says.
The forward expresses his excitement to be part of the project, “The club has a very professional project, with quality staff and a lot of players with great projection,” Castro says. He continues, “Hopefully I will be contributing a lot in positive leadership, as well helping the young players grow, whilst also continuing my growth as a professional player.”
Castro says he is looking to compete and win, “I see a lot of projection in the team, even though it’s still premature. Other players are coming, as well as the ones that are already here who will continue to grow.”
El Tanque believes any team requires a base and combination between young players and experienced players. He also has his goals clear, “We know the tournament of La Liga de Ascenso, we need to have a lot of focus. It goes step by step and our first step will be to qualify to semifinals, and so on,” Castro says.
He ends by stating he believes they have a lot of possibilities, yet a lot of work needs to be done. “We have 3 months to strengthen the team knowing it’s going to be a difficult tournament. There are quality teams in the tournament, and in order to compete against them we need to have young, committed players, as well as other signings that will help us compete like we want,” Castro says.
